This course will provide an overview of trends in Catholic religious education. It will introduce students to sources of Catholic teachings on education with highlights on its philosophy, pedagogy, approaches, and developments. Taking into account the contemporary situation of Catholic education in the Philippines, it will discuss how Catholic schools respond to the educational challenges of the time. Likewise, how the young people today view and practice their being Catholics in the Philippines will also be examined.

September 30, 2017 – Young People and Being Catholic in the Philippines

Speaker: Dr. Jayeel S. Cornelio. He is the director of the Development Studies Program at the Ateneo de Manila University and treasurer of the Philippine Sociological Society. Dr. Cornelio has held visiting posts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Lancaster University, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, and Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu (Romania). He was also a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen, Germany. Dr. Cornelio is the author of Being Catholic in the Contemporary Philippines: Young People Reinterpreting Religion (Routledge 2016). The National Academy of Science and Technology has named him the 2017 Outstanding Young Scientist in the field of sociology.
